The Skegs

Last year my friend and former co-worker Larry Chandler contacted me about doing a CD cover for his band The Skegs. Larry worked with me in the art department at ILM, doing incredible work with animatics and such--he's also an excellent guitar player! His band The Skegs are an excellent surf/rockabilly/lounge band.
I'm a big fan of the great surf guitar bands of the 50's/60's ( like Link Wray, Dick Dale, The Ventures ) and the neo-surf bands that came out of the 90's/2000's ( Man or Astroman?, Bomboras, Satan's Pilgrims ). The cover was a lot of fun to do and I like the way it turned out ( surf babes, noir--how can you go wrong? ).

Please check out The Skegs at a Bay Area venue near you. And pick up their CD ( contact them at their MySpace page linked above ) or download some tunes. Great music to draw or drive to!

anson, dominic, randy-

Thanks for stopping in!

I remember going to see so many of the neo-surf bands in the 90's. There were a lot of good ones. A lot of the original surf bands had a second surge during this time. I remember seeing Dick Dale (at least 3 times) and Link Wray in San Francisco. At Link's show, he was so excited, he leaped off the stage forgetting that he was on 70 year old legs with 70 year old knees and couldn't finish the show! He put on a great show though!

Went to see Man or Astroman live several times. Great show complete with tesla coil!

The Skegs are also an awesome band. In addition to Larry's great guitar work, RD Maynard plays bass for The Gone Jackals. To hear the Jackals, click Anson's link above and click on the first movie link on his Jan 14 post.

Fantabulous cover. I need to buy this CD, not only for the music but to bring my Benton CD collection up to six.

A band that came about during that neo-surf period which wasn't a neo-surf band at all was the Mono Men (neo garage I guess you'd call 'em). Been playin' "Sin and Tonic" like crazy again. Slightly off topic I guess. Sorry.

I also wish you'd post that classic Trash Women poster you made back in the mid 90s. Without a doubt there would be no Les Toil if it wasn't for that poster and your teaching me how you did it.

Find it. Scan it. POST IT!

BTW, your Skegs link isn't working Benton.
